Perseverance Businessman - Mr.Tan

1951 was a poor century. Mr.Tan was born in this year. Born in a big family, he was very independent since he was a child. Every morning he swept the floor and did house chores himself. Nobody taught him this. And now this little boy has grown to be a mature man, a successful businessman. He is doing international trade of tapioca starch.
Mr.Tan and family.

I: Mr.Tan, you were born in a poor and big family. I am sure life was harder and harder.

Mr.Tan: Yes, that time I had eleven siblings. Father’s income was not enough to support the whole family through his little salary. I knew that my parents were very busy and tired. Mother need to wash the clothes of whole family and cooked for all of us. Sometimes mother did not have time to look after us. I did not know what I can do. So, I just help to sweep floor and tidy up my own things and help to take care of younger brothers.

When Mr.Tan was small, he loved his father so much. His father was so gentle.

I: Did you complain the harsh life that time?

Mr.Tan: I did not have time to think of it. Last time I was not smart. I tried my best to learn in school. After my father’s death, I did not study anymore. I was 17 years old that time. I worked in father’s factory with uncle. All the bitterness and sourness only buried in heart.

                                                  Tapioca starch in Mr.Tan's factory.

I: How did you become a businessman from a young man?

Mr.Tan: After father’s death I worked very hard and learned as many things as I could. Father’s death was really a sad memory to me. I love father so much. I learnt a lot of things in doing business. Although uncle was very strict and liked to scold people, I still did my work properly. I grabbed the chance to meet with people and business partners.

I: Did you face any challenges when you were young?

When dealing business, big company manager always looked down on me and said my company was small. I felt sad that time. Doing business was difficult that time. So I just learned through work although it was indeed uneasy.

I: Now what are your challenges being a successful businessman?

Mr.Tan: Life is stress. Every day I have to talk a lot and send mails to business partners from different countries. There were nights that I could not sleep well. I have to notice world news like climate and talk to business partners to exchange information. It was very tension when I have to do decision in facing the higher prices of stock. Negotiate with supplier is common to me. You have to get a cheap price to buy starch and manage to sell the starch to other companies. Trade needs experiences. It was physically and mentally tired.

I: What was your unforgettable experience?

When I was young, I injured in factory on my leg. The machine did not work properly and I got injured seriously. It was an unforgettable experience. I was nearly died. Luckily I was sent to hospital immediately. Very painful. It took me a month to recover. Even I discharged from hospital, I still felt pain and could not walk. I could just only lie on bed.

To be success, it needs a lot of perseverance and hard work. Determination is important.

I: what is the most important thing to be success?

It needs a lot of perseverance and hard work. You need to be determined. Success needs opportunity and fate. Prepare yourself always and be exposed to learn more things. Then you could be success when the chance is in front of you.

Old Folk’s Home nearby. We don’t want Tong Sui to be wasted. It’s a good
way too. At least old people could taste the sweetness of  Tong Sui and recall
of old memories. Now is better. We sell Tong Sui in the house. Much more
            convenient and easier.

Wong: No matter how, we still need to sell Tong Sui. When customers came, they
were interested to know different types of Tong Sui. We let customers try

I: Wow, what a wonderful spirit! You have sold many types of Tong Sui and each day’s
Tong Sui also different. That must be a lot of work. Around what time you have to
wake up to prepare Tong Sui?

Wong: Yea, a lot of work. Every bean (red bean, green bean, and soybean) needs different time to soak. Time of boiling Tong Sui is different too. We need to be careful to every different kinds of Tong Sui. We need to wake up around 5 in the morning to prepare ingredients.

We know the ingredient whether it is fresh or not by touch and see and smell. The left is luo han guo, the right one is white fungus. The yellow colour white fungus is fresh.

I: It seems like your life is busy. You need to buy ingredients and boil Tong Sui, even
serve customers and work half day.
Wong: Everything is a usual routine to us. But the most time-consuming thing is
replenishment of ingredients. We need to go ourselves to choose ingredients. If
hire a person to do, he might not be serious. So we do ourselves to make sure
the ingredients are fresh. We know the ingredient whether it is fresh or not by
            touch and see and smell.

I: What is the happiest thing in selling Tong Sui?

Wong: When we meet customers who appreciate and take care of health, we feel
happy. We could share information together and we exchange different
views of taking care of health. Health is wealth. It is our determination.
Between, when we saw customers finish all Tong Sui in the bowl,
indeed we feel satisfied as our efforts could be appreciated by customers.

There are many colour papers sticking to show customers the sweet soup of the day.

The colourful papers with chinese explanation of the advantages of Tong Sui and different ingredients in Tong Sui.

I: Could you share some advices to youngsters in order to encourage them to
pursue their dreams?

Wong: For young people, don’t be afraid of failure. Do whatever you want. Trial and
error. Don’t give up easily. Success people always learn from mistakes. Be
positive even you face obstacles. Remember nothing is perfect. Don’t think of
being success without hard work and effort.
Wong: Yong people, don’t be afraid of failure.

I: For those who do not know their dream, how?

Wong: It’s ok. Dun worry. If don’t have dream yet, learn whatever you do. It depends on
individual. Think of your capabilities and choose whatever you want. If you only
can carry 1kg of rice, you can’t carry 2kg of rice. It all depends on your
capability. Free your heart and learn from mistakes. The most important is the
process of learning and figure out your dreams. If you don’t know your goal,
think slowly. For goals will change when age and experience change. Nothing
stays forever. So as your dreams. The more you grow, the more you realize
what you want actually. You may realize your earlier dream is replaced by
            new one.

Shinnie - A lover of Green Environment

シニーさんはATC(法律の大学)の学生です。
Shinnie is a Law student of ATC (Advanced Tertiary College). She likes writing since she was 13 years old. Last year, she had wrote a novel and the book published by Rawangboy Publishing House. Her ambition is to protect the earth. Shinnie, a girl who strives for environment.

Shinnie, strives for environment.

I: Hi, Shinnie. I heard that you have published a new Chinese book recently.

Shinnie: Yea, I wrote the book with two friends. The book is about love.

Shinnie's new published book.

I: That’s good. You are only 22 years old and you already have your own published book. When do you start writing? How do you develop interest of writing?

Shinnie: I enjoy writing since form 1. I was influenced by writers like Liu Yong, Ou
Yang Lin, J.K.Rowling and others. I was influenced by Lu Xun too. He studied to
be a doctor, but in the end he chose to be a writer, because he realized what the
Chinese need is not someone to cure their illness, but to cure their mentality. I
hope to write something to convey a positive message to people who read my
what I wrote, and I find writing a good way to entertain people too. I wrote
about prostitution in form 1 and I wrote an unfinished novel about protecting
environment in form 3 never published, but those were the areas I hope to
 write about most.

I: I see. Do you have any dreams?

Shinnie: I wish to do something for our environment. I'm very concerned with Asia's
water crisis, Malaysia's in particular and with other issues like pollution and
human trafficking. I wish to raise awareness about  how serious these issues
are through writings. At the same time I would like to help prosecute
             companies that breach environmental acts.

Shinnie and her friends. (Shinnie the second from right.)

I: So you study law to achieve your dream?

Shinnie: Science is the most effective way to help curb these environmental problems.
The only thing law can do is to assist science, ensuring the power does not fall into
wrong hands. That's what a person who practise law can do to help deal with these
problems. Realistically I know that can’t ensure my survival in the society... But yes,
I intend to do whatever that can protect the environment.

I: Do you think being a lawyer can help you in achieving your dream?

Shinnie: Alternatively being a lawyer can’t help much with this issue, I will not hesitate
to help out companies that try to come up with breakthrough technologies to deal with
environmental problems. Being a lawyer is not a must for me, because at the end of the
day I will have to weigh which method can help me to achieve my goals better.

I: Ok. So can I say your dream is to do anything that can protect the environment?

Shinnie: Yes.

        Environmental crisis and Financial Crisis

I: Do you foresee any obstacles that you'll facing?

Shinnie: Yes. I'll have to figure out how to ensure my financial survival. These things
are no money-earners, and I need to make money to live. However, I believe I can
cope with it with property and share investment. Another obstacle is, our world is
attacked by two crisis together: financial and environmental crisis. Most countries
will of course make financial crisis as their priority the policy is to place financial
crisis as priority. Thus it will not be an easy task to prosecute companies. It is
getting even harder when some big companies had figured out ways to breach
environmental act without being punished. Besides, Malaysia is one of the Asia
countries that waste most water. It is not be easy to change the people's mindset.

I: Do you have friends to support your ideas and work with you to protect environment?

Shinnie: It is not easy to find such friends. So far the only one who supports me is my
boyfriend. I am sure there are many environment enthusiasts around too. All other
parents are neutral. They just want  their children to manage to get good income to
support their elder lives. They're neutral.

Let's love the earth like Shinnie. Follow the diagram as we are the
      lover of earth.

Interview with Lifang in English:

Lifang, a girl that impressed me so much the first time I saw her in university.
She was on her wheelchair, with her mother beside her. Her mother was very care with her little action.

Lifang comes from Kedah, Malaysia. She had met an accident on her sixteen years old. She had spinal code injury after the accident. From her neck onwards to her leg, she could not feel and do anything anymore. Currently she is studying social science in USM.

Cheerful Lifang.

(lifang = Lf) place: Lifang’s room

I :Hello, Lifang, nice to meet you.
Lf :Nice to meet you.
I :How is your life?
Lf :Yeah, fine here.
I :Do you face any difficulties in your daily life? Like in studies?
Lf :Fine. My friends do help me when I don’t understand something.

I :Mind I ask you how is your injury after accident?

Lf :After accident I had spinal code injury. From my neck onwards to leg, I
could not feel and do anything for the whole life.

I :If I were you, I will feel extremely hard to accept the fact. I am sure
you do have hard time. How do you face it?

Lf: I stayed at home for three years and I did nothing. Mother took care of
me and she accompanied me all the time. She feed me, took me to bath
and took things for me. Besides, many religious friends came to visit me
and talked to me a lot. At first I found it kinda hard to accept the
fact.My friends accompanied me and I did gain comfort from them.

Lifang with her mother.

I : Alright, so your mother always accompany you. Did you both argue
sometimes?

Lf: Sometimes we will have disagreement. Yet my mother did not argue with
me. She was soft to me.

I : How was your life after that?

Lf: I went to handicapped centre for two years. I began to learn computer
skills there. There were volunteers taught me English. After that, I
decided to take SPM. I hope I could continue further study through exam.
Then I trained myself to hold pencil to write. Finally I managed to use
left hand to write. I still could not write properly. Then I was allowed
to use computer to sit for SPM. I did my best and later I successfully
entered to KTAR(a college).

I : I think your family and friends were pretty proud of you. You were
getting near to your dreams. Was life in college a new starting point
to you?

Lf: Yea, my family were very happy. So did I. I studied in college for two
years. I chose computer science as major but the lecturer advised me not
to take it as I might not follow up. I might not speed using computer.
After discussing, I chose Information System Engineering. My goal was to
enter university. USM was my choice.

I : So, congratulations! You are here after years of efforts.

Lf: Thank you. I thanked my parents and all people that helped me a lot.

I :How do you think of USM- your dream university?

Lf: USM is great! I choose this university is because here is nearer to my
hometown. People here are very friendly. I remembered, the officers of
university drove to my room and fetched me to class by van every day.
I could not move at all. So, every time they need to carry me to van
and carry me out of van, including my wheelchair. It’s really a tiring
job. Some times, they carry me more than 10 times a day just to take me
to class and send me back home. I am very proud of my university that
cares for handicapped person like me.

I : So, who is the one that always encourage you?

Lf: I got motivation from religion Soka Gakka which emphasize culture, peace,
wisdom and bravery. This is a Japanese buddizm teaching. Whenever I face
difficulties, I will say “nam nyo ho ren kyou”. I will feel better and
energetic after I say it. It is really something that gives me strength
to face it.

I : Great! Do you have dreams that you hope to achieve?

Lf: Yes. I want to stand up one day. I want to go abroad because I heard that
there is high-tech equipment may help me stand up one day. Next I want to
share about soka gakka to my friends around. I hope they will be happy
like me.

I : Wow! It’s good. Do you think you are a positive person?

Lf: Well, I just won’t waste time to think negative things.

I : You’re really cool! You really positive!

Lf: One of my senior told me, “don’t think so much, just pay attention to
what you are doing right now.”It’s really encouraging.

I : Will you complain the fate that falls on you?

Lf: I did before. But after some time, I am gratitude to what I have now.
I have get to know soka gakkai. I found my meaning of life. I want to
share soka gakkai to friends around. I become strong after I believe
in soka gakkai. I am very thankful to my family and friends around that
helped me a lot.

I : Lastly, do you have anything to say?

Lf: We handicapped people need a fair environment. We need a place that is
free from obstacles. Treat us like normal people. We are just ordinary
people same like you all.

I : Indeed what you say is right. Thank you for let me interview you. I am
sure your spirit really spark us up. All the best.

Lf: Thank you. All the best to you too.
